A Amazon.com is seeking approval from US communications regulators. USA to deploy over 4,500 satellites in its global fast internet project.
The company had previously said it planned to invest at least $10 billion to launch 3,236 of these satellites through the “Project Kuiper” program. On the night of Thursday (4), the company requested approval from the US communications agency (FCC) to deploy a total of 7,774 satellites.
On Monday, Amazon asked the FCC for approval to launch and operate two prototype satellites by the end of 2022.
Amazon said in its request that the satellites “will serve homes, hospitals, businesses, government agencies and other organizations around the world, including in geographic areas where reliable broadband is still lacking.”
“Although connectivity has improved globally, only 51% of the global population and 44% of the population in developing countries are online,” the company said in the order.
In 2020, the FCC approved Project Kuiper’s plan for Amazon’s low-orbiting satellite constellation. The plan competes with the Starlink network being built by SpaceX, owned by billionaire Elon Musk.
Amazon recently accused Musk of ignoring a series of government-imposed rules.
