US Ambassador in Ukraine, Bridget Brink, You are moving away from your position said a spokesman for the State Department on Thursday (10), in an attitude that brings new uncertainty to the relationship between Washington and Kiev.
THE Reuters He previously reported that Brink was considering renouncing and leaving foreign service, according to a US authority and two other people familiar with the matter.
“THE Ambassador Brink is fired . She was ambassador there for three years-it’s a long time in a war zone, ”said a state department spokesman in response by email.
Brink was nominated for office by former President Joe Biden and has been acting as Ambassador in Kiev since May 2022. She is leaving on her own, the sources said.
Brink is one of the highest -level career diplomats to leave the state department since Donald Trump took over the presidency on January 20. She joins other veteran officials who are leaving, with decades of experience, such as the agency’s third employee John Bass, who walked away in January.
Its departure occurs when the Trump government tries to negotiate an agreement between Ukraine and Russia to end the war that began with the large-scale Russian invasion in 2022. Washington tried to implement two limited ceasefire agreements in recent weeks-one for energy infrastructure and one in the Black Sea-but both failed.
It is unclear who will assume the position of US ambassador to Ukraine . The US authority and another person familiar with the matter said that Chris Smith, an assistant Undersecretary for Eastern Europe and political and regional affairs in the European and Eurasiatic Office, is being considered. Smith previously served as a mission deputy at the US embassy in Kiev from 2022 to 2023.
Brink, who supervised the transition between two governments with very different policies in Ukraine, was recently criticized for his response to a Russian attack that hit a playground in the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, Kryvyi Rih, killing 11 adults and nine children.
On the social media platform X, Brink posted on the attack, but did not mention Russia.
Zelenskiy criticized the US embassy, saying in X that his answer was “surprisingly disappointing.”
“Such a strong country, such a strong people, and yet such a weak reaction,” said Zelenskiy. “They are even afraid to say the word ‘Russian’ when they refer to the missile that murdered children.”
There was no indication that this episode was a factor for Brink’s departure.
Although political nominees usually present their waivers when a new president assumes the position, most of the foreign service career officers continue from one administration to another, even if the president -elect has the right to switch new officers in these positions.
Sources said Brink will probably come out in the coming weeks.
