US special climate envoy John Podesta will meet with his Chinese counterpart Liu Zhenmin in Washington in May, resuming bilateral discussions on climate cooperation amid tensions between the two countries in the areas of trade and security, Chinese officials said.
This is Liu's first visit to Washington in his new role, after replacing veteran climate envoy Xie Zhenhua, who stepped down for health reasons in January.
Liu has been in talks with Podesta since he took on his new role as the US's top climate diplomat this year, replacing John Kerry. However, envoys from the world's two biggest carbon emitters have yet to hold formal discussions.
Liu told Bloomberg TV that he will meet with Podesta when he visits the US.
A source familiar with the visit said Liu will be in Washington from May 8 to 10. The source also said that Liu will also travel to New York.
China's Foreign Ministry said Liu will visit the US in a report on Secretary of State Antony Blinken's trip to China last week.
Kerry and Xie played a key role in brokering the final outcome of COP28 in Dubai, agreeing bilateral language that paved the way for broad acceptance of an agreement by all countries to transition away from fossil fuels.
They have also maintained cordial personal ties during periods of tension between the US and China, keeping an open diplomatic channel on climate change.
