US and Cuba condemn invasion of the Mexican embassy in Quito

The United States spoke this Saturday (6) through State Department spokesman Matthew Miller about the events that occurred at the Mexican embassy in Quito, where security forces invaded to arrest former vice president Jorge Glas.

“The United States condemns any violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and takes very seriously the obligation of host countries to respect the sanctity of diplomatic missions under international law,” said the US State Department statement.

He added: “Mexico and Ecuador are crucial partners of the United States and we greatly value our relationships with both countries. We encourage the two countries to resolve their differences in accordance with international standards.”

Bruno Rodríguez, Foreign Minister of Cuba, said that, as a sign of solidarity with Mexico, his country's ambassador to Ecuador accompanied the Mexican ambassador's departure from Ecuadorian territory.

“I communicated with Alicia Bárcena, Secretary of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, and conveyed to her all our solidarity and support for warm Mexico. At the request of Mexican authorities, the Cuban ambassador to Ecuador, together with other Heads of Mission, accompanied the Mexican ambassador as she left the country,” he reported on his X account (formerly Twitter).

Police raided the Mexican embassy in Quito on Friday night (5) to arrest the former vice president of Ecuador, Jorge Glas. The politician was twice convicted of corruption and had been at the embassy since December, when he requested asylum from the Mexican government.
