US and Denmark authorities are expected to meet this week, says newspaper

Dane Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen should meet with United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio, this week in the first conversations since President Donald Trump’s reelection and his promise to “take control” of Greenland, the Financial Times said.

The perspective of the meeting arises amid tension between the two nations about American interest in taking control of Greenland, the Arctic Island controlled by Denmark since 1721.

The meeting is planned to the backstage of a meeting of NATO Foreign Ministers in Brussels, scheduled to start on Thursday (3), pointed out the newspaper on Tuesday (1st), citing two informed employees about the preparations.

However, the authorities warned that the event could be canceled due to tense relations between Copenhagen and Washington, he added.

The US State Department did not immediately respond to a request for commentary from Reuters.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen is visiting Greenland from April 2-4 for conversations with the new government of the semi-autonomous territory, a few days after a visit by the United States Vice President JD Vance.

On his trip, Vance accused Denmark of not doing a good job of keeping the island safe and suggested that the United States would better protect strategically localized territory.
