US and Israel agree on humanitarian aid plan for civilians in Gaza, says Blinken

The United States and Israel “agreed to develop a plan that will allow humanitarian aid from donor nations and multilateral organizations to reach civilians in Gaza,” US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced this Tuesday (17) in Tel Aviv, local time.

“It is essential that aid begins to arrive in Gaza as quickly as possible,” highlighted Blinken in statements at a US diplomatic building in Tel Aviv.

The top American diplomat noted that the country shares “Israel’s concern that Hamas could confiscate or destroy what enters Gaza or prevent assistance from reaching people who need it.”

“If Hamas in any way prevents humanitarian assistance from reaching civilians, including by seizing the aid itself, we will be the first to condemn [a ação]. And we will work to prevent this from happening again”, he highlighted.

The secretary further stated that the agreement to develop the plan was made at the request of the US, and that they “welcome the commitment of the Israeli government to work on this plan”.

“The president hopes to discuss the matter further when he is here on Wednesday,” commented Blinken, referring to United States President Joe Biden’s scheduled trip to Israel in the coming days.

The announcement made by Antony Blinken comes at a time when a “total siege” against Gaza by Israel has triggered a humanitarian crisis in the enclave. UN bodies and humanitarian organizations warn that the health system is on the verge of collapse.

Furthermore, border crossings closed by Israel and Egypt mean that humanitarian aid cannot enter the territory.
