US announces $457.5 million in civil aid for Ukraine

The United States will provide $457.5 million in new civil security assistance to Ukraine Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement on Monday (26).

The aid is intended for the operation of Ukrainian law enforcement and criminal justice agencies, the statement said.

At the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) in New York, US President Joe Biden accused Russia of causing the world food crisis and defended the expansion of the grain export agreement with the country and the Ukraine, which has faced Russian invasion for more than six months.

Biden opened his speech by talking about the invasion of Ukraine by Russian President Vladimir Putin: “Let’s be clear, a permanent member of the UN Security Council invaded the neighbor, tried to erase the sovereign state from the map”.

“Russia has blatantly violated the fundamental principles of the Charter of the United Nations,” he said. He added that “permanent members of the UN Security Council must consistently uphold this letter.”

The US president has directly blamed the global food crisis on Russia, accusing the country of “pumping lies” about Western sanctions amid the war in Ukraine.

“Russia is spreading lies, trying to blame the crisis on sanctions imposed by many around the world for the aggression against Ukraine. So let me be perfectly clear about one thing: our sanctions explicitly allow Russia the ability to export food and fertilizer. No limitation,” she said.

“It is Russia’s war that is worsening food insecurity, and only Russia can end it,” he added.

Ukraine receives US air defense system

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in an interview broadcast on Sunday that Ukraine has received sophisticated air defense systems from the United States.

It is the first recognition that Ukraine has received the National Advanced Ground-Air Missile System, long requested by Kiev and whose shipment was approved by Washington in August.

“We absolutely need the United States to show leadership and give Ukraine air defense systems. I want to thank President (Joe) Biden for a positive decision that was made,” Zelensky said.

“But believe me, it’s not nearly enough to cover civilian infrastructure, schools, hospitals, universities and Ukrainian homes.”

Zelensky also thanked the US for other multiple rocket launch systems that allowed Ukraine to advance against Russian forces.

Ukraine has carried out counter-offensives this month to free large swaths of territory in the northeastern region of Kharkiv from occupation, and has also made strides in the south.
