US announces new tariffs on German and French products

The United States has announced an increase in tariffs on some European Union products, which include component parts, some non-sparkling wines and various cognacs and brandy types from France and Germany.

The statement from the US Trade Representative Office. indicates that the new rates will enter effective next January 12 and that they are a response to the EU decision to impose sanctions on American products last October.

In the context of the conflict with the European Union over aid to Boeing and Airbus, the World Trade Organization (WTO) authorized the EU to impose tariffs on products from the United States as compensation for the grants received by Boeing.

The EU decided to impose tariffs worth 4,000 million dollars (3,360 million euros) on the import of a series of products from the United States: a 15% tariff on products of the sector aeronautical and additional duties of 25% on a range of products agracolas e industrial from the United States.

The United States considers that, in imposing these tariffs, the EU used trade data from a period in which trade volumes had been drastically reduced due to the effects on the global economy of Covid-19, which would have caused them to be imposed tariffs “on many more products than would have been covered if it had used a normal period.”

The United States says that it explained to the EU the distorting effect of the selected time period, but that it refused to change its approach, so now the country “is forced to change its reference period to the same period used by the Union European “.
