US announces reopening of embassy in Kiev: “important step”

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced that the flag over the US embassy in Kiev was re-hoisted on Wednesday, in what he called an “important step”. The building had been closed for three months, since before the invasion of Russia.

“Today, we are officially resuming operations at the US Embassy in Kiev. The Ukrainian people, with our security assistance, defended their homeland in the face of the unscrupulous invasion of Russia, and as a result, the US flag is flying from the embassy once again,” Blinken said in a statement.

“We are proud and continue to support the government and people of Ukraine as they defend their country from the brutal Kremlin war,” he added, reflecting on the US commitment to Ukrainians even when the embassy has been closed for the past few months.

“Three months ago, we lowered our flag over the embassy in Kiev, Ukraine, just days before Russian forces crossed the Russian border to carry out President Putin’s unprovoked and unwarranted war of choice,” the secretary said.

“When we suspended operations at the embassy, we made it clear: while we would relocate US embassy personnel for their safety, this would in no way prevent our involvement and support of the Ukrainian people, government and civil society as well as our allies and partners,” he added. .

Blinken noted how this has been a goal that the Biden administration began working on as soon as the diplomats left.

“We underlined our commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, pledged to continue our assistance and started working towards the day when we could return to Kiev. Now, that day has come,” she noted.

The secretary did not specify how many US diplomats would be operating outside the embassy. He pointed out that there are additional security measures in place – with “our improved security measures and protocols”.

“We are committed to facing the challenges that lie ahead. The war continues. Russian forces inflict death and destruction on Ukrainian soil every day. Millions of Ukrainians are displaced from their homes and mourn the loss of their loved ones. With strength of purpose, we reaffirm our commitment to the people and government of Ukraine and look forward to fulfilling our mission from the US Embassy in Kiev,” concluded Blinken.
