US, Asian allies say way open for talks with North Korea

The way is open for a “serious and lasting dialogue” with North Korea, according to a joint statement by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi and South Korean Foreign Minister Parki Jinn on Friday. .

Officials have expressed “deep concern” over North Korea’s launch of a suspected intercontinental ballistic missile and two short-range ballistic missiles the day after US President Joe Biden’s visit to the region.

They urged North Korea to stop violating international law and return to talks, and reaffirmed their commitment to working more closely with the international community to that end.

The joint statement also noted the nations’ concern about the “serious difficulties” facing the people of North Korea in the wake of the Covid-19 epidemic and their hope that North Korea would accept foreign aid.
