US attorney prepares a dozen more charges against Donald Trump

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis is expected to pursue more than a dozen counts when she presents her case on efforts by Donald Trump and his allies to overturn the results of the 2020 Georgia presidential election before a grand jury next week, sources familiar with the matter told CNN .

Willis, a Democrat, is eyeing conspiracy and racketeering charges, which would allow her to file lawsuits against several defendants. His broad criminal investigation focuses on efforts to pressure election officials, conspiracy to present fake voters and a violation of voting systems in rural Coffee County, Georgia.

Trump acolytes who participated in each of these schemes believe they will face indictments in Georgia next week, people familiar with their thinking said. Trump also believes he will be charged in the case, the CNN .

Willis’s office declined to comment.

Witnesses Willis subpoenaed when she presented her case include former Republican Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan, former Democratic Georgia State Senator Jen Jordan and independent journalist George Chidi. All of them have previously testified before a special purpose grand jury charged with investigating the Trump case and heard more than 75 witnesses.

Willis launched his investigation into Trump in early 2021, shortly after he called Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and pressured the Republican to “find” the votes needed for Trump to win the state.

Willis reportedly considered racketeering charges in the Trump case.

Willis’ team has moved forward with plans to make collection announcements in the coming weeks, even as Special Counsel Jack Smith has charged Trump with four federal charges related to his efforts to stay in power after losing the 2020 presidential election.

Much of the conduct in the indictment related to efforts to reverse the results of the Georgia election. Trump pleaded not guilty in that case.

The former president’s legal team believes he will likely face his fourth charge in the coming days, people familiar with the matter told CNN .

At a campaign stop in New Hampshire on Tuesday, Trump complained about the cases piling up against him, adding: “I probably have another one.”
