The administration of US President Joe Biden has declared cryptocurrency mixers as money laundering centers that threaten the country’s national security.

In this way, the Treasury Department is combating the misuse of all aspects of the critical mixer ecosystem by terrorists, including Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad militants.

“Today’s actions underscore Treasury’s commitment to combating cybercriminals and terrorist groups,” said Treasury Deputy Secretary Wally Adeyemo.

The ministry recalled that back in February 2022, statistics showed that criminals began to increasingly use anonymity technologies, including cryptomixers, to hide the movement or origin of funds.

Shortly after, US authorities sanctioned Blender.io, which they said helped North Korea launder more than $20.5 million in cryptocurrency following the Axie Infinity hack.

In 2022, US authorities also listed the Tornado Cash cryptomixer, which may have been used by the North Korean hacker group Lazarus to launder funds stolen from decentralized platforms.

In August, the US District Court for the Western District of Texas rejected a lawsuit by users of the cryptomixer Tornado Cash, who claimed that the US Treasury exceeded its authority by imposing sanctions on the service.
