US: Authorities investigate death of co-pilot who left plane mid-flight

Authorities said they had recovered the body of a man who left an aircraft mid-flight during an emergency landing last Friday (7/29) in North Carolina (USA).

Early Friday afternoon, a twin-engine CASA CN-212 Aviocar landed on the grass at Raleigh-Durham International Airport, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) informed CNN in a statement.

Two people were on board when the plane took off, although an airport spokesperson told the airline’s affiliate CNN , WRAL, that only the pilot was on board when the aircraft landed. The pilot’s health status was not released on Friday.

The body of the man believed to be the co-pilot was recovered in the town of Fuquay-Varina, about 24 kilometers from Raleigh, Wake County Emergency Management Spokesperson Darshan Patel told a news conference.

A resident alerted officers searching the area that he heard something in his backyard, Patel said.

The co-pilot has been identified as Charles Hew Crooks, just 23, of Raleigh, according to the Fuquay-Varina Police Department.

It is unclear whether Crooks jumped or fell from the plane, officials say. He was not using a parachute when his body was recovered, Patel said.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the incident.
