US believes Putin was misinformed by his advisers about the war

The US government is “confident” in the assessment that Russian President Vladimir Putin was misinformed by his aides about the performance of his military in Ukraine, according to a senior US State Department official.

On Wednesday, the US revealed intelligence information showing that Putin was misinformed by his own advisers.

“There’s not much we can say about where this information is derived from,” the official said, declining to provide additional details about the intelligence. He explained that it was necessary to protect sources and methods.

“Putin seems to have thought that he could enter Ukraine, that his forces would not encounter resistance, that they would be warmly received, that he would be able to take Kiev in a matter of 48 to 72 hours,” the official said.

“Every element he seems to have believed is wrong. So his advisers weren’t giving him the whole truth or he wasn’t listening to them. I think we’ve seen that at all times so far,” he concluded.

On a visit to Morocco, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said: “One of the Achilles heels of autocracies is that you don’t have people in these systems who speak truth to power or who have the ability to speak truth to power. . And I think we are seeing that in Russia.”
