The United States believes that significant parts of Syria’s rebel coalition, Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham (HTS), maintain strong ties to the Islamic State, according to a senior US official.
HTS has been designated a Foreign Terrorist Organization by the United States, Turkey, the United Nations, and several other Western nations.
In 2018, the United States offered a $10 million reward to its military leader Abu Mohammad al-Golani.
In an exclusive interview with CNN Golani rejected HTS’s persistent terrorist designation, calling the label “primarily political and at the same time inaccurate” and arguing that some extreme Islamic practices had “created a divide” between HTS and jihadist groups.
He stated that he was opposed to some of the most brutal tactics used by other jihadist groups, which led him to cut ties with them. He also stated that he was never personally involved in attacks against civilians.
