US President Joe Biden will sign an executive order today to help ensure women’s access to abortion and contraception after the Supreme Court overturned last month’s Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion, the White House said .
Biden was under pressure from progressive supporters to take action after the Supreme Court decision overturned nearly 50 years of protections for women’s reproductive rights.
The US president will direct the Department of Health and Human Services to take action to protect and expand women’s access to “medical abortion” approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), according to the White House.
It will also direct the ministry to ensure that women have access to emergency medical care, family planning services and contraceptives.
Biden’s attorney general and White House counsel will convene volunteer attorneys and other organizations to provide legal advice to abortion patients as well as abortion providers.
“This representation may include protecting the right to travel out of state to seek medical care,” the White House said in a statement.
The executive order, to be signed by Biden today, will also aim to protect patient privacy and guarantee the safety of mobile abortion clinics across state borders, while also directing the creation of a task force to is coordinating the administration’s response to access to reproductive health care, the White House said in its statement.
