The United States bombed Islamic State (ISIS) targets in Syria this Sunday (8), amid the collapse of the Bashar al-Assad regime and the seizure of power by rebel groups.
According to a US official, the airstrikes targeted “leaders, agents and camps” of the Islamic State. B-52 bombers were used, as well as F15 jets and A-10 aircraft.
The incursions were also confirmed by the US Central Command (CENTCOM). In a statement, the organization stated that the attacks aimed to ensure that the Islamic State did not take advantage of the current situation in Syria.
“Battle damage assessments are ongoing and there are no indications of civilian casualties,” a US government official said.
The official also said that “CENTCOM, together with allies and partners in the region, will continue to carry out operations to degrade the operational capabilities of ISIS, even during this dynamic period in central Syria.”
President Joe Biden also said on Sunday that the US intends to continue its anti-ISIS operations in the country.
