President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign received a significant boost with the release of new data showing a dramatic decrease in border apprehensions. According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, arrests for illegal entry into the U.S. from Mexico plummeted 29% in June, marking the lowest monthly level under the Biden administration. The total number of apprehensions in June was 83,536, down from 117,901 in May and the lowest number since January 2021.
This positive development follows the announcement of a Presidential Executive Order on June 4, 2024, which temporarily suspended the entry of non-citizens across the southern border. The executive action was intended to prevent the U.S.-Mexico border from becoming overwhelmed. CBP figures reflect a significant decline in migrant encounters following this proclamation, underscoring the impact of the new border security measures.
In a statement, Troy A. Miller, the CBP’s top official serving as commissioner, highlighted the effectiveness of the recent measures. “The recent border security measures have had a significant impact on our ability to enforce consequences for those who cross illegally, leading to a 29 percent decline in U.S. Border Patrol apprehensions from May to June. We also saw a more than 50 percent drop in the seven-day average from the announcement through the end of the month, and we doubled the rate at which we removed noncitizens from U.S. Border Patrol custody in June,” Miller said.
A closer look at CBP data reveals a more comprehensive picture of the impact of Biden’s policy. Encounters at the southwest border have declined by more than 50% over the past six weeks, with the Border Patrol’s seven-day average falling to fewer than 1,900 encounters per day. This sharp decline has been seen across a range of nationalities, including Mexicans and Chinese, who have been hit hardest by the suspension of asylum applications.
The city of San Diego has emerged as the busiest of the nine border patrol sectors with Mexico, followed by Tucson. In June alone, more than 41,000 people legally entered the U.S. through the CBP One online appointment scheduling app. Since its introduction in January 2023, the app has facilitated 680,500 successful appointments.
In addition, nearly 500,000 people from four countries have signed up to a policy that allows two-year stays, provided they have financial sponsors and arrive at an airport. This group includes 104,130 Cubans, 194,027 Haitians, 86,101 Nicaraguans and 110,541 Venezuelans, according to CBP data.
As the presidential election approaches, these developments provide a critical talking point for voters and highlight the administration’s ongoing efforts to effectively manage immigration and border security.
