US calls for UN Council meeting to talk about North Korea

The United States will ask the United Nations Security Council to meet publicly on Wednesday to talk about North Korea, a U.S. official said, after Pyongyang fired a ballistic missile at Japan from first time in five years.

The launch, which drew immediate reaction from Tokyo and Seoul, comes amid a series of missile tests, with five launches in the past 10 days, and follows renewed military exercises between the United States and its regional allies.

Any significant action by the 15-member council is unlikely, diplomats say.

North Korea has been banned for years from carrying out nuclear tests and ballistic missile launches by the UN Security Council, which has tightened sanctions on Pyongyang over the years to try to cut funding for those programmes.

In recent years, the veto powers of China and Russia have suggested that UN sanctions against North Korea be relaxed for humanitarian purposes and to lure Pyongyang back into stalled international negotiations with the aim of convincing leader Kim Jong Un to denuclearize.
