The United States called on Sunday (9) for a vote on the UN Security Council resolution that proposes a permanent ceasefire and the release of hostages in Gaza.
“Israel has accepted this proposal and the Security Council has the opportunity to speak with one voice and call on Hamas to do the same,” said Nate Evans, spokesman for the US mission to the United Nations, in a statement on Sunday (9 ).
“Doing so would help save the lives and suffering of civilians in Gaza, as well as hostages and their families,” he said, adding that council members should not let this opportunity “pass by.”
The timing of the vote is not immediately clear. The draft resolution, a copy of which was obtained by CNN last week outlines three phases to end hostilities.
The first phase includes “a full and complete ceasefire with the release of hostages”, the second phase would see “a permanent end to hostilities in exchange for the release of all hostages in Gaza and a full withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza” and the third, “the beginning of a major multi-year reconstruction plan for Gaza”.
The proposal also “rejects any attempt at demographic or territorial change in the Gaza Strip, including actions that reduce the territory of Gaza, such as through the permanent establishment, official or unofficial, of so-called buffer zones” and “reiterates its unwavering commitment to achieve the vision of a negotiated two-state solution.”
