Americans go to the polls on Tuesday (8) for the midterm elections.
435 seats in the House and 35 of the 100 seats in the Senate will be exchanged.
In an interview with CNN Radio the coordinator of the Brazilian Center for Studies and International Business at ESPM Alexandre Uehara evaluated that the popularity of President Joe Biden had a considerable drop.
According to him, Biden entered with a popularity rating of 57% and is now at 36%: “There has been a significant loss of support, (…) voters sometimes do not look at the candidates’ proposals, but at the performance.”
“In fact, the possibly pro-Republican results may not even come as a surprise, presidents lose seats in the House, it is common, since they are elected and after 2 years they end up being reassessed.”
In this way, the professor sees that the “legislative configured may not be just Republican, but Trumpist, with candidates linked to former President Donald Trump elected in the House and Senate.”
A Trumpist victory, for Uehara, “may cause congressional investigations against Trump in relation to the Capitol invasion to be halted.”
In addition, “the result of now could jeopardize the next two years of the Biden administration.”
Alexandre Uehara believes that Biden’s low popularity is caused by economic performance.
“Voters are going through a difficult period, particularly in relation to high inflation, close to 8%, which is high for the US.”
The expert points out that, looking at this economic issue, Republicans point out the errors as Biden’s, while Democrats have the frustration, as they expected better data.
