The United States has carried out five self-defense strikes in areas of Yemen controlled by the Iran-backed Houthi militia, US Central Command said on Sunday.
The strikes hit three mobile anti-ship cruise missiles, an unmanned underwater vessel and an unmanned surface vessel on Saturday.
Central Command said it determined the missiles and vessels posed an imminent threat to U.S. Navy ships and merchant ships in the area.
Houthi attacks in the Red Sea area have been a sign of the spread of conflicts in the Middle East since war broke out between Israel and Hamas following the Palestinian militant group's October 7 attack.
The Houthis, who control the most populated parts of Yemen, say their attacks are in solidarity with Palestinians attacked as Israel attacks Gaza.
Faced with growing violence in the Red Sea, major shipping lines have largely abandoned the important trade route in favor of longer routes around Africa.
This has increased costs, fueling concerns about global inflation.
