US condemns ‘war crimes’ after Russian drone strike hits building in Kiev

The United States will hold Russia responsible for “war crimes”, the White House declared on Monday, hours after drone strikes, which killed at least four people in a damaged residential building in Kiev.

Among the victims was a pregnant woman, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko. Ukraine’s Interior Minister Denys Monastyrskyi said there had been deaths in other cities but did not provide a total figure.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky proclaimed that there were more onslaughts. “Right now, there is a new Russian drone strike. There is [drones] that were overthrown.”

Ukraine’s Interfax news agency reported that Telegram users reported explosions in the city of Fastiv on the outskirts of Kiev, as well as in the southern port city of Odessa.

Russian forces also attacked infrastructure across Ukraine in the second wave of air strikes in a week. The circumstances of the first wave were repeated, with the aggressions taking place when people were commuting to work and school.

Ukrainian soldiers fired into the air trying to shoot down the drones after explosions rocked Kiev this morning. An anti-aircraft rocket was seen in the sky, followed by an explosion and orange flames as residents ran for cover.

US President Joe Biden’s press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said the White House “strongly condemns Russia’s missile attacks today” and that the onslaught “continues to demonstrate the brutality of [presidente russo Vladimir] Putin”.

Citing a new $725 million military aid package announced for Ukraine last Friday, she said: “We will continue to support the people of Ukraine for as long as necessary.” “We will continue to impose costs on Russia, hold them accountable for their war crimes,” she added.

Black smoke billowed from the windows of the building in Kiev and emergency service workers were working to put out the flames.

“I’ve never been so afraid… It’s murder, it’s just murder,” said Vitalii Dushevskiy, 29, a food delivery guy who rents an apartment in the building.

Nearby, Elena Mazur, 52, was looking for her mother, who managed to call her to say she was buried under the rubble.

“She’s not answering the phone,” Mazur explained, hoping her mother would be rescued and taken to the hospital.
