US confirms that drones were seen over air base in Germany

Drones were seen flying over the United States air base in Ramstein, Germany, in early December, a US Air Force spokesman said on Friday (13).

There was “no impact to the base’s residents, facilities or assets”, said the spokesperson.

“Together with host country authorities, we continue to monitor airspace to ensure the safety and security of the community,” he added.

A security source told Reuters that German authorities had not tracked the drone operators but had ruled out the possibility that the devices were controlled by amateurs.

The drone sightings over Ramstein were first reported by German magazine Spiegel, which said a report from German security authorities had flagged a series of unexplained drone sightings over the base on the nights of December 3 and 4.

Spiegel reported that drones were also spotted over sites belonging to German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall and chemical group Basf.

“Facility security is our top priority,” said a company spokesperson in a statement.

“Therefore, we are always on the lookout for suspicious activity and work closely with the relevant security authorities,” he added.

Rheinmetall, which is working with Ukraine and its European backers to supply weapons to Kiev, did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment.

Drones have been seen flying over strategically important facilities in Germany in recent months, including a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Brunsbuettel, near the North Sea.

Prosecutors were investigating this incident on suspicion of “activity by agents for sabotage purposes.”

German intelligence chiefs have warned that the country’s support for Ukraine in its war against Russia makes it a target for possible sabotage attempts, with recent security incidents at military barracks raising further alarm.
