Members of the US House of Representatives will vote later today on a huge package of almost $ 14 billion for the Ukrainian crisis, which includes financial and humanitarian aid, as well as the supply of weapons and ammunition.
These funds will allow Kyiv to protect its electricity grid, fight cyber attacks and equip itself with defensive weapons. The package also includes more than $ 2.6 billion in humanitarian aid.
“Ukrainians are deprived of food, clothing, shelter, electricity and medicine,” said Democratic Sen. Chuck Sumer, urging Congress to act “very quickly.”
The money will also allow the United States to fund a response against Moscow, starting with sanctions against Russian oligarchs.
The amount is entered in the US federal budget for the year 2022, which MPs must decide before the end of the week.
Following today’s vote in Parliament, the bill will go to the Senate before being signed by President Joe Biden.
Democrats and Republicans support the move – something rare in a politically divided Congress.
“The United States and its partners are going through a dangerous period,” said Republican Mitch McConnell, who saw the agreement as a “decisive step that our national security needs.”
