One day after the US midterm elections are over, Congressional control remains undetermined.
Republicans hold 49 seats in the Senate, while Democrats hold 48. Two states are still up for grabs and Georgia’s seat will be decided by a runoff in December.
In the House, it can take days for a full picture to emerge, as votes are still being counted in states like California, Oregon, Nevada and Arizona.
Senate
It is still too early to say which party will gain control of the Senate. The Democrats have had the only advantage so far with John Fetterman’s victory in Pennsylvania, but they still need to win two more seats to secure control.
On Wednesday (9), the CNN projected that Republican Senator Ron Johnson would retain his seat in Wisconsin and that Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock and Republican Herschel Walker would go into a December 6 runoff in Georgia.
THE CNN did not make a projection of party control in two other seats – Arizona and Nevada.
As of 1:30 a.m. Thursday, Democratic Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona was ahead of Republican Blake Masters by about 95,000 votes after a Maricopa County poll report expanded Kelly’s lead.
As of Wednesday, about 600,000 votes have yet to be counted in Arizona.
In Nevada, Republican Adam Laxalt currently leads the count against Democratic Senator Catherine Cortez Masto. CNN estimates that from 11:30 pm. As of Wednesday, about 160,000 votes still need to be counted in Nevada.
Nightly voting reports from major counties are expected in both states.
While the CNN projected that the Alaskan Senate seat will be controlled by the Republicans, the CNN did not project whether Senator Lisa Murkowski or Kelly Tshibaka will prevail. If neither wins more than 50% of the first choice votes, the result will be decided by ranked choice voting.
Chamber
As of this writing, there are 35 uncounted races in the House – Democrats led the vote count in 24 of them, while Republicans lead in 11.
Republicans need to win 9 more seats to reach the 218 needed to control the House, Democrats need to win 27 more seats to reach 218.
