Alex Jones, known in the circles of conspiracy theorists and of the extreme right on USAwas sentenced to pay compensation almost a billion dollars to families of his victims massacre in 2012 at Sandy Hook Elementary School because claimed it was a “fraud”.
The founder of the website Infowars maintained for years that the carnage, which left behind 20 children and six adults dead“was staged” by the government in order to deprive Americans of their weapons and that “no one was killed”. He had also called the relatives of the victims “actors”.
His theory spread on the internet, as a result for ten years relatives of the victims, but also an FBI agentwho had rushed to the scene of the attack, to receive threats and harassment.
A jury in Waterbury, Connecticut, near Sandy Hook Elementary School, ruled, as reported by APE-BPE, that Jones must pay the families of eight victims and the FBI agent $965 million for defamation and moral damages.
“A historic decision” as stated by Chris Mattei, one of the families’ lawyers, who promised that he will do everything so that it is “implemented”.
In the courtroom, relatives of the victims cried when they heard the decision.
Alex Jones was also in the room, while the Infowar website broadcast the developments live, with Jones himself commenting on them.
Immediately after the announcement of the decision Jones said he plans to appealwhile adding that he has “two million in cash” and asked his followers to support him by buying products from his website and donating.
However, he emphasized that this money “won’t go to these people” referring to the relatives of the victims. “They will go to fight this fraud and to stabilize the company”.
“They want to scare us into questioning Uvalde and what really happened in Parkland,” Jones said, referring to two other school shootings in the US. “Guess what: we’re not afraid, we’re not going anywhere and we’re not going to stop,” he emphasized.
Alex Jones has already been ordered by a Texas court to pay nearly $50 million to a couple whose 6-year-old son was killed in Sandy Hook. At this trial the conspiracy theorist was forced to publicly admit that the massacre did happen.
“I’ve apologized hundreds of times and I’m done apologizing,” he said in his deposition at the end of September, adding that he was not responsible for the actions of his followers.
A third Sandy Hook defamation trial is pending against Jones, which will begin in Texas later this year.
