US contacts Huawei founder’s daughter to file lawsuit against her

US Department of Justice holds talks with financial director and daughter of founder of Chinese giant telecommunications company Huawei, Meng Wangzhou, who may be allowed to enter into an agreement and return to her homeland, wrote the Globe & Mail newspaper yesterday, citing Canadian sources whom she did not name.

Meng Wangzhou was arrested at Vancouver International Airport in December 2018 on a warrant issued against her by USA, which accuses her of fraud, in particular that she tried to mislead HSBC about Huawei’s dealings with Iran.

The US government is prepared to withdraw its extradition request and terminate the criminal proceedings against Meng if she pleads guilty and agrees to pay a large fine. according to the post.

The parties have been holding talks for weeks, always according to the newspaper, which cited two of its sources.

Neither Huawei nor the US Department of Justice responded immediately, when the Reuters news agency contacted them to ask them to comment on the post.

Ms. Meng, who insists on pleading not guilty and fighting against her extradition, lives in a luxury Vancouver property wearing an electronic bracelet. It is guarded by a private security company, at its own expense, under the decision to release her on parole.

The hearing on its possible extradition ended on 18 August and the date of the decision will be set on 21 October.

Following Ms. Meng’s arrest, Chinese authorities arrested two Canadians; one, Michael Speivor, was sentenced in August to 11 years in prison for “espionage,” a retaliation by the Canadian government.

The Globe & Mail report also said that the development could pave the way for the Chinese authorities to release the Canadians, without invoking a source. However, the text emphasizes that the Canadian authorities are not involved in Huawei’s talks with the United States.
