US court orders Trump to hand over documents under penalty of $10,000 a day

A New York judge has charged Donald Trump, the former president of the United States, with civil contempt after the state attorney general’s office said he failed to hand over documents that would form part of the investigation into his company.

Judge Arthur Engoron said Trump did not comply with his order to comply with the subpoena, and that his lawyers did not show how a search was conducted for materials that are with the former president.

Engoron said Trump would be fined $10,000 a day until he served the subpoena.

“Mr. Trump, I know you take your business seriously, I take mine too. I hereby hold you liable for civil contempt and fine you $10,000 per day until you resolve that contempt,” Engoron said at a hearing Monday.

New York Attorney General Letitia James’ office has been investigating the Trump Organization for more than two years.

Investigations found that multiple misleading or fraudulent statements and omissions were found in the Trump Organization’s financial statements — which were provided to lenders and insurers, among others.

Andrew Amer, speaking on behalf of the attorney general’s office, said Trump had failed to deliver “even a single response document” to a subpoena he was issued in December.

“We’re being hampered in our efforts to have a full understanding because we don’t have proof of the person who sits at the top of the organization,” Amer said.
