US: Criminal charges against Donald Trump’s longtime adviser

Criminal charges have been brought against Steve Bannon, a longtime adviser to the former president of USA Donald Trump for failing to comply with a summons issued by a House of Representatives committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on Capitol, announced today the Ministry of Justice.

Bannon refused to comply with the summons aimed at searching for documents and his testimony, citing his insistence Trump – which has already been rejected by a judge – that his communications are protected by the legal doctrine of presidential privileges.

Bannon, 67, is accused of contempt of Congress for refusing to testify and refusing to provide documents, the Justice Department said.

«From the first day of my term, I promised the employees of the Department of Justice that together we will show the American people in words and deeds that the Department respects the rule of law, follows the facts and the law and seeks justice on an equal footing, in accordance with the law.“, Said the Minister of Justice Merrick Garland in his announcement. “Today’s allegations reflect the ministry’s firm commitment to these principles.”
