The US State Department said the possibility of Russia delivering weapons to North Korea is “incredibly concerning”.
“This would destabilize the Korean Peninsula, of course, and potentially violate UN Security Council resolutions that Russia itself supported,” spokesman Matthew Miller warned reporters.
The statement comes after a speech by Vladimir Putin, president of Russia, in which he indicated that the country could send weapons to its ally in Asia.
“I said, including in Pyongyang, that we then reserve the right to supply weapons to other regions of the world. Taking into account our agreements with [a Coreia do Norte]I don’t exclude that either”, he pointed out.
The Russian president threatened earlier this month to supply weapons to Western adversaries.
This would happen due to the sending of high-precision weapons to Ukraine by countries in NATO, the Western military alliance, and the permission for Kiev to attack targets inside Russia.
On a trip to North Korea this week, Putin and Kim signed a treaty committing both countries to provide immediate military assistance to the other in the event of armed aggression against either of them.
