The US government is “deeply concerned” by renewed fighting between Armenian and Azerbaijani forces that have erupted in the disputed enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh, US State Department spokesman Ned Price said yesterday.
“We call for immediate action to reduce tensions and prevent further escalation,” the State Department spokesman said in a press release.
Azerbaijani authorities announced yesterday that they captured several positions and destroyed targets in Nagorno-Karabakh, where at least three people were killed in hostilities with Armenian forces. The resurgence of clashes in the mountainous enclave raises fears that the war will start again.
The conflict over control of the region, controlled by Armenians since the 1990s, escalated again in the fall of 2020, when a 44-day war broke out during which Azeri forces overran several sectors.
The two sides recently agreed to work on a peace plan following a Russian-brokered ceasefire deal, but Baku and Yerevan frequently accuse each other of ceasefire violations along the border.
