US destroyed Yemeni Houthi missiles and drones

Seven anti-surface cruise missiles, mobile anti-surface ballistic missile launchers (ASBMs) and a drone were destroyed in areas controlled by the Houthi rebels of Yemen during four raids conducted yesterday Wednesday in “legitimate defense”, announced the joint command of the US armed forces responsible for the Middle East region (CENTCOM, “central command”).

CENTCOM clarified via X (formerly Twitter) that the raids took place from 12:00 to 18:45 (Sanaa time; 11:00 to 17:45 Greece time) and added that the Houthi weapons systems posed “a direct threat to merchant and US naval vessels in the Red Sea area.

Since November, the Houthis, an armed movement backed by Iran, have targeted vessels in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden which they say are linked to Israel, in a sign of “solidarity” with the Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip, where war has been raging between the Israeli army and the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas since October 7, the Athens News Agency reports.

The attacks have forced major shipping companies to suspend their ships passing through the strategically important region, through which about 12% of world trade passes.
