U.S. diplomacy said Monday it was “deeply concerned and frustrated” by the sentencing of Turkish President Osman Kavala, who was accused of plotting to overthrow President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government, to life in prison.
“This unjust condemnation runs counter to respect for human rights, fundamental freedoms and the rule of law,” State Department spokesman Ned Price said in a statement.
“We once again call on Turkey to release Osman Kavala, as well as” all those who have been arbitrarily imprisoned “in the country,” the State Department said in a statement.
“We remain deeply concerned about the ongoing judicial crackdown on civil society, the media, politicians and businessmen in Turkey,” the State Department said in a statement.
It refers to “prolonged pre-trial detention, overly broad allegations of supporting terrorism and prosecutions for insults” by the head of state or public officials.
Washington urges Ankara to “stop politically motivated persecution and respect the rights and freedoms of all Turkish citizens,” concluded a statement signed by Mr Price.
Mr. Kavala was found guilty of attempting to overthrow the Turkish government by financing demonstrations. The European Court of Human Rights and Western governments have called the trial of a businessman and philanthropist, a black sheep in the Erdogan government, a political persecution.
Mr. Kavala, who has always denied the charges against him and has been jailed for four and a half years, was sentenced despite repeated appeals by his lawyers to be acquitted for lack of evidence.
There is no provision for his release on parole, the judges clarified.
A figure in Turkish civil society, 64-year-old Osman Kavala, has been accused of funding anti-Erdogan protests known as the “Gezi Park movement” in 2013 and in the wake of a July military coup attempt. 2016.
