The professionals of the US embassy in Ukraine who remained in the country must remain in the city of Lviv, in the west of the country. The information comes from the online newspaper Ukrainskaya Pravda, citing a US diplomatic source on Sunday, amid growing fears of a possible Russian invasion.
The US Embassy in Ukraine could not immediately be reached for comment.
Washington said Saturday that it had ordered most staff at its embassy in Kiev to leave Ukraine immediately because of the threat of an invasion from Russia.
“This is a temporary decision, embassy staff will return to Kiev as soon as the security situation allows,” said the source at Ukrainskaya Pravda.
US warnings that a buildup of more than 100,000 Russian troops near Ukraine could herald an invasion have become increasingly urgent in recent days.
Moscow has denied it plans to invade and has accused the West of hysteria.
