Donald Trump’s lead over Kamala Harris on the economy and crime is eroding among U.S. voters, a sign the Democratic vice president’s campaign is on a roll ahead of the Nov. 5 presidential election, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll.
The poll, conducted between August 23 and 25, shows that former President Trump’s approach to the economy and jobs is preferred by 43% of registered voters, with 40% preferring Kamala.
The 3 percentage point difference is too small to be significant because of the poll’s margin of error of 4 percentage points. An earlier Reuters/Ipsos poll in late July showed Trump with an 11-point lead on the economy.
On the issues of crime and corruption, Kamala and Trump were tied with 40% support each, showing more movement in Kamala’s favor, who was 5 points behind Trump in the July poll.
Recent national polls have shown Harris opening a narrow lead over Trump since she entered the race on July 21 after President Joe Biden opted out of the race. A Reuters/Ipsos poll in late July showed Harris up 1 point, to 42% from 43%.
The impact of independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s decision to drop out of the race on Friday (23) remains to be seen. Kennedy, who had 8% of the vote in the July poll, opted to endorse Trump.
Trump’s campaign speeches have frequently criticized the Biden administration and its handling of the economy, with people feeling the effects of years of high inflation. Kamala has promised to keep prices under control and suggested actions such as tackling abusive price increases in supermarkets.
The new poll showed the economy is the top issue for 26 percent of registered voters, compared with 22 percent who see political extremism and threats to democracy and 13 percent who see immigration as a problem.
Voters prefer Kamala to Trump on the issue of extremism, 42% to 36%. Trump has an advantage on the topic of immigration, preferred by 45% of voters against 37% for Kamala.
Neither candidate enjoys broad public support, with 59 percent of voters saying they have an unfavorable view of Trump and 52 percent of Harris. Harris is viewed favorably by 47 percent of voters, compared with 39 percent for Trump.
The survey surveyed 1,028 adult voters online across the country, including 902 registered voters.
