Negotiations for a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine are at an impasse, directly influenced by the presidential elections in the United States. This is the analysis of ESPM International Relations professor Leonardo Trevisan, in an interview with CNN Behind the Scenes .
According to Trevisan, both sides of the conflict are apprehensive about the possible results of the American elections.
“Russia looks at this and says the following: if the Chamber wins, the war will continue and the Americans will put more weapons here,” explains the expert, highlighting Russia’s fear of American military power.
On the other hand, Ukrainians are also showing concern. “Ukrainians also know: ‘if Trump wins, we are lost’,” adds Trevisan, illustrating how political uncertainty in the US directly affects the strategies and expectations of the countries involved in the conflict.
Mediation attempts
The professor highlights that, given this scenario of mutual apprehension, some countries have tried to mediate the negotiations.
“Countries, including those from Northern Europe, Norway, have also tried to build this bridge in some way,” mentions Trevisan, also citing Turkey’s efforts in this regard.
However, these mediation initiatives have not had the desired effect. “At the moment, the negotiation effort is paralyzed,” the expert concludes, indicating that progress in the peace talks depends significantly on the outcome of the American elections.
The current situation reflects a historical pattern in wars involving Russia, as Trevisan recalls: “If we look at this, if we want a historical example, we think of Napoleon or Hitler. They both entered Russia. It was getting out that was difficult.”
This observation suggests that the current conflict may be prolonged, especially considering the influence of international political dynamics.
