US elections: George W. Bush congratulates Donald Trump on victory

Former President George W. Bush made his first statement about the 2024 presidential campaign this Wednesday (6), congratulating Donald Trump on his victory.

“I congratulate President Trump on his election as the 47th President of the United States of America, as well as Vice President-elect JD Vance and their families,” Bush said.

He thanked President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for their service and highlighted the election turnout as “a sign of the health of our republic and the strength of our democratic institutions.”

“Laura and I are grateful to the election workers, poll workers and volunteers who oversaw a free and fair election. We join our fellow citizens in praying for the success of our new leaders at all levels of government,” he said.

Bush has remained notably silent about the 2024 race, refusing to endorse a candidate amid calls from Republicans such as former Rep. Liz Cheney and former aide Nicolle Wallace to throw their support behind Harris.

His daughter, Barbara Bush, went door-to-door in battlefield Pennsylvania on Harris’ behalf.

When will Donald Trump be inaugurated as President of the United States?
