Minnesota Governor Tim Walz thanked Vice President Kamala Harris in comments made in his home state this Friday (8), following her electoral defeat.
“I don’t know about you, but I’ve had a week,” Walz said as he took the stage and drew laughter from the crowd.
The former Democratic vice presidential candidate thanked Kamala for “the faith she placed in me, but more importantly, the powerful and joyful campaign she ran.”
“I am grateful for his leadership and eternally grateful for his friendship,” he added.
“It’s hard to lose. It’s hard to understand why so many of our citizens — people we fought so hard for — ended up choosing the other path. It’s difficult to predict what the path will be like over the next four years,” he said.
He also acknowledged that there may be some voters disappointed with the outcome, but encouraged them to take time and return when they are ready.
“So if you’re feeling down, discouraged today, I understand. Take time, take care of yourself, take care of your loved ones, take care of your community. There are a million ways to make a positive difference. And come back to this fight when you’re ready. And know that when you are ready to get back into this fight, I will be here ready to fight the fight with you,” he told supporters.
Although he said he didn’t have much time to “process” the defeat, he said he “has never felt more inspired.”
“Even in the face of defeat and deep disappointment, I have never felt more inspired. I have never felt more motivated. I have never been more excited about what is possible in this country,” he added.
Kamala gave her speech last Wednesday (6) afternoon. Walz did not speak at that event.
Walz also thanked the supporters present in the room and “every person who was with us in this fight”, saying it was “an honor of a lifetime to have your support”.
Walz is back in Minnesota to serve out the remainder of his second term as governor. He still has two years left in office.
First Lady Gwen Walz introduced her husband and also thanked supporters, “from our family to yours, thank you,” she said.
Gwen Walz said Kamala is a “remarkable leader and she would have been a remarkable president.” She told the crowd that “loss hurts” and said that “it’s okay to feel sad” and “regret what could have been.”
