The U.S. embassy in Lebanon again urged Americans in the country to “leave now while commercial flights remain available due to the unpredictable security situation.”
An updated security alert on Friday provided extensive advice on the embassy’s capabilities during a crisis and warned Americans who choose to remain in Lebanon to “have a crisis action plan that does not depend on assistance from the US government.”
“The best time to leave a country is before a crisis, if possible. Civilian evacuations from a foreign country with U.S. military assistance are rare. There is no guarantee that the U.S. government will evacuate U.S. citizens and their families in a crisis situation,” the alert states.
“In the event a U.S. military-assisted evacuation occurs, our focus will be on assisting U.S. citizens. The US government generally cannot provide transportation within the country during a crisis. This includes transportation to the starting points,” he continued.
The US State Department raised the travel advisory level for Lebanon last week to Level 4: “Do Not Travel.”
Lebanon borders Israel to the north. Israeli forces exchanged fire with the radical Islamic group Hezbollah across that border, while also fighting Hamas further south in Gaza.
