The US embassy in Ukraine hopes to return to Kiev by the end of May, if conditions allow, Chargé d’Affaires Kristina Kvien told a news conference in the city of Lviv on Monday.
“We very much hope that conditions will allow us to return to Kiev by the end of the month,” Kvien said. “We have listened to the security professionals, and when they tell us we can come back, we will.”
The US decided to close the US Embassy in Kiev on February 14 and temporarily relocate a small number of remaining diplomatic staff in the country to Lviv, just 10 days before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Kvien later told CNN in an interview that this step would be “symbolically important” and would also help us “do our job”.
“We’re doing things over videoconferencing, phone and WhatsApp and that’s helpful, but there’s nothing like talking directly,” she told CNN.
However, all embassy staff will not return at the same time, Kvien said.
“Usually we have a very large embassy in Kiev. Obviously, we won’t be going back all at once. So everyone who will come back [no] first group are very eager to go back, if anyone had reservations we would not force anyone to go,” she said on Monday.
