The US embassy in Mexico reported this Thursday (4) that consulate authorities were investigating the firing of gunfire at a hotel near Cancun, Mexico.
The Public Security Secretariat of Quintana Roo said it had received reports of “irregular activity taking place in the vicinity of a hotel” in the municipality of Puerto Morelos, approximately 30km away from Cancún. Through social media, the Secretariat indicated that the information is preliminary.

Hyatt Ziva Riviera Cancun hotel officials told guests to seek shelter amid reports that armed men entered the hotel. The hotel is popular with American tourists. An American guest who asked not to have his identity revealed, from Atlanta, confirmed to CNN who sought refuge.
As the guest, hotel security informed that he heard on the staff radio that there was a “threat to the hotel” and that guests should “stay in their rooms”. He also said that police car sirens were heard and that the hotel is in communication.
Another guest declared to CNN who heard several gunshots while in the pool area and then hid. He didn’t want to reveal his identity for safety.
“I was by the pool when several shots were fired back and forth for a while. Everyone hid,” he said.
