The United States plans to deploy Lockheed Martin’s F-22 fighter jets, as well as the USS Cole destroyer in the Arabian Gulf, to help the United Arab Emirates build a shield against attacks by pro-Shiite Houthi rebels in Yemen.
USS Cole goes to the region and “will patrol the UAE territorial waters”, in cooperation with the UAE air defense, in order to protect the Arab country, stressed the US General Kenneth F. McKenzie, Commander of the US Central Command , speaking to the Emirati state agency WAM. “In addition, within the next week, an squadron of F-22 fighters will arrive in the country.”
Iranian-backed Houthis in Yemen, who control about 50 percent of the country and its capital, Sanaa, have launched rocket and drone strikes against the UAE in the past month. The UAE hosts about 2,000 U.S. troops based in Abu Dhabi, while the United States last month issued a travel directive to avoid travel to the UAE, largely because of the risk of rocket and drone strikes by Yemeni rebels.
The United States will work with the United Arab Emirates to further improve its air defense capabilities, according to General McKenzie, quoted by Bloomberg News.
“We are working with our partners here in the region and with industry in the US to develop solutions that are successful against drones,” he said.
