The father of the suspect in the shooting at Apalachee High School in Georgia told investigators he bought the gun used in the shooting as a Christmas present for his son in December 2023, according to two law enforcement sources with direct knowledge of the investigation.
This information indicates that the purchase of the weapon took place months after authorities first contacted the family, while investigating a threat of attack that was allegedly made by the young man arrested this Wednesday (4).
The student, who was 13 during the May 2023 investigation, said “someone is accusing him of threatening to shoot up a school, stating that he would never say such a thing, even jokingly,” Jackson County Sheriff’s Investigator Daniel Miller Jr. wrote in a statement.
The teen’s father told investigators at the time that he had hunting rifles at home and said: “[O jovem] is allowed to use them when supervised, but does not have unrestricted access to them,” according to the document.
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office closed the investigation at the time because a lead on the threat could not be substantiated.
THE CNN made multiple attempts by phone and in person at the family’s home to contact the arrested student’s father. It is unclear whether he has an attorney.
