US: Fiat Chrysler subsidiary fined $300 million after settlement over emissions scandal

A U.S. subsidiary of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles was sentenced Monday after pleading guilty in June to criminal conspiracy and will pay about $300 million to settle a Justice Department multiyear investigation into emissions fraud. from diesel engines.

FCA US LLC, formerly Chrysler Group LLC, previously reached a settlement with the Justice Department, agreeing to pay a $96.1 million fine and pay another $203.6 million in restitution. FCA US, now a subsidiary of Stellantis NV, was also sentenced to three years of judicial supervision.

The company was accused of misrepresenting emissions from diesel engines in more than 100,000 2014-2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Ram 1500 diesel vehicles.

The Department of Justice announced that FCA conspired to falsify emissions data in tests conducted in the US.

The total fine of approximately $300 million “is the result of a painstaking three-year investigation,” said Assistant Attorney General Todd Kim. “This decision shows that the Department of Justice is committed to holding accountable companies that mislead regulators. ”

The government noted that FCA US had previously paid $311 million in civil liability and more than $183 million in damages to more than 63,000 people in a class-action lawsuit over diesel emissions.
