Two bodies were recovered and 10 people rescued after two boats collided in Florida’s Biscayne Bay on Friday night, the US Coast Guard said.
Miami Beach Coast Guard teams and a helicopter crew rescued 10 people and found a body in the water, according to a statement released Saturday.
The Miami-Dade Fire Department also recovered a body from the bay, the statement said.
A person involved in the collision notified the Coast Guard Friday night, reporting 12 people in the water about a mile west of the Key Biscayne region.
The collision occurred near the Nixon Beach Sandbar, according to Miami City Fire Department Spokesperson Lt. Pete Sanchez.
A seriously injured survivor was taken to Jackson Memorial Medical Center, the Coast Guard said. Teams transferred the remaining survivors to HCA Florida Mercy Hospital, according to the statement.
“On behalf of the Coast Guard and our partner agencies, we would like to offer our most sincere condolences to the families and friends who have lost loved ones,” said the lieutenant commander. Benjamin Tuxhorn, coordinator of the Coast Guard Sector search and rescue mission in Miami.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is investigating the accident.
