US: For the first time since 1859, a 10th vote is required to elect the speaker of the House of Representatives

The impasse in the election of a new president of the House of Representatives did not even come to the ninth vote, since the Republicans remain divided and the 20 “rebels” refuse to support the party’s candidate, Kevin McCarthy.

McCarthy received 200 votes (218 needed), Byron Donalds 17 and Kevin Hearn three.

Due to the impasse, the american The 435-seat House has become incapable of even swearing in members, let alone sitting, considering bills or scrutinizing Democratic President Joe Biden’s administration.

The Republicans esecured a narrow majority (222 to 212) after the midterm elections in November and therefore McCarthy cannot afford to lose the support of more than four Republicans when Democrats rally around their own nominee.

For a century the president of the House of Representatives was elected from the first ballot. In 1923 nine laps were needed, while ten had been needed in 1859 and this record has been equaled today.
