The US government has formally declared that members of the Russian military committed war crimes in Ukraine, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement on Wednesday.
The official US statement that Moscow committed the conflict laws violations comes after Blinken, President Joe Biden and Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman said it was their personal opinion that war crimes had taken place.
“Today, I can announce that, based on currently available information, the US government assesses that members of Russian forces committed war crimes in Ukraine,” Blinken said.
“Our assessment is based on a careful analysis of the information available from public and intelligence sources,” he said.
“As with any alleged crime, a court with jurisdiction over the crime is responsible for determining criminal guilt in specific cases,” continued Blinken.
“The US government will continue to track reports of war crimes and will share information we collect with allies, partners, institutions and international organizations as appropriate. We are committed to pursuing accountability using all available tools, including criminal prosecutions.”
