US House Speaker Unveils Agenda in Asia Without Mention of Taiwan

The President of the Chamber of United States Nancy Pelosi, will visit four Asian countries starting this Sunday (31), informed her office.

The list of nations is surprising not to mention Taiwan amid intense speculation that the deputy could visit the self-governing island claimed by the China .

“Speaker Nancy Pelosi is leading a Congressional delegation to the Indo-Pacific region, including visits to Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan,” reads a press release.

“The trip will focus on mutual security, economic partnership and democratic governance in the Indo-Pacific region,” the document adds.

Tensions are simmering between the United States and China over the possible trip to Taiwan.

Recently, Chinese leader Xi Jinping warned US President Joe Biden that “if he plays with fire, he will get burned”.

In a separate incident, Taiwan’s Defense Ministry said it detected an unidentified drone flying over Dongyin Island – which is controlled by Taiwan but located close to mainland China – twice on Thursday, adding that it cannot rule out that the drone has been used to “gather intelligence” in the area.

The Defense Ministry statement made no reference to China and did not speculate on who might have operated the drone.
