US House Speaker’s husband undergoes surgery after being attacked

Paul Pelosi, 82, husband of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, underwent surgery on Friday to treat injuries to his skull, right arm and hands. He is expected to make a full recovery. Paul was attacked with a hammer by David DePape, 42, who broke into the couple’s San Francisco home.

Police officers witnessed Nancy Pelosi and DePape vying for control of the hammer before Paul was attacked. “The suspect took Nancy’s gavel and violently assaulted Paul,” said San Francisco Police Chief William Scott. “Our officers immediately immobilized the suspect, disarmed him and took him into custody, in addition to requesting medical support.”

The attacker would be looking for the Speaker of the House, according to sources. He would have yelled “where’s Nancy?” at least twice and later, while trying to tie Paul up, he stated that he would wait for “Nancy to get home”.

Paul Pelosi, husband of the Speaker of the United States, Nancy Pelosi was attacked with a hammer, after an attacker broke into the couple’s home in San Francisco on Friday morning (28), police sources told CNN .

Pelosi, 82, was hospitalized but is expected to make a full recovery, the Democratic president’s office said in a statement.

The US Capitol Police (USCP) released a statement saying it is assisting the FBI and San Francisco Police “with a joint investigation” into the home invasion of Pelosi, California.

The statement provides more information on how officials responded, saying that special agents from the USCP’s California Field Office “rapidly arrived on the scene, while a team of investigators from the Department’s Threat Assessment Section was simultaneously dispatched from the East Coast to assist the FBI and the San Francisco Police with a joint investigation.”

Drew Hammill, a spokesperson for Nancy Pelosi, said the attacker is in custody and the motive for the attack is being investigated. Nancy Pelosi was in Washington at the time of the attack, a spokesperson said.

“The Speaker of the House and her family are grateful to the first responders and medical professionals involved and request privacy at this time,” Hammill said in his statement.

The attacker entered Pelosi’s home from the back of the house, according to two sources familiar with the first details of the incident. With Nancy absent, there wouldn’t be a security detail at the residence, according to a source familiar with the protocol.

There may be a video that the US Capitol Police and authorities can review as there are security cameras in the house, according to two law enforcement sources.

US President Joe Biden spoke with President Pelosi, the White House said.

“The president is praying for Paul Pelosi and the entire family of President Pelosi. This morning he called President Pelosi to express his support after this terrible attack,” press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement.

She continued, “He is also very happy that a full recovery is expected. The president continues to condemn all violence and asks that the family’s desire for privacy be respected.”

The Pelosis have been married since 1963 and have five children.
